A (LATE) Look Back at 2011

Well the new year is a month behind us however I am going to get back into the blogging mode and I figure the best way to start is to see where I came from.  2011 was full of “goals” which were not achieved.  I cannot however say that it was a complete waste of time.

First off, lets start with the weight.  I began 2011 at 225.4 (That is fat for anyone 5’11” unless you are an Olympic power lifter which I a not!).  I currently weigh in at 211 lbs.  It’s not a huge drop in weight from last year and I am still at an unhealthy BMI/BF% however it could have been worse, I could have gained MORE weight!

Now the miles.  In 2011, I put in 840 miles, however these were quite sporadic!  My peak month was 141 miles in August and my low was 12 miles in April & 29 in March.  I began the year strong with to 70+ mile weeks, and I had a good summer with 100+ miles in June, July & August.  So what happened?  First off, I am a public accountant so the beginning of the year is always a disaster work wise, especially March leading into April.  This year I definitely need to do a better job squeezing in my runs, even if I don’t feel like getting out of bed or I get home late.  Then there were a few issues on the injury front.  I had a bit of a knee issue in September leading up to October.  I also had some problems with my left foot late November into December.  In 2012, I need to make it a point to run a little smarter and also to take a seriously look at my eating habits and drop some pounds because it is not healthy to be running this large!

Finally, the races.  My race of the year, Can Lake 50M was to be my first Ultra. Well this didn’t work out, as I had to deal with the knee as mentioned above.  I did however finish the NY Marathon (4h25m).  I was shooting for sub 4 hour however the lack of solid mileage in the 2 months leading up to the race had me settling for just finishing.  I also finished a bunch of 5-10Ks; 9 @ 5k & 3 @ 10k to be exact.  My fastest 5k was a 21:52 in September.  Also, 2 of my 3 10k’s were run back to back against a 5k.

What’s in store for 2012?  First and foremost, I want to finish my first Ultra.  I deferred Can Lake to 2012 so that is on the schedule for October 2012.  In preparing for this race, I may squeeze in a 50k in August, integrated in my training plan.  I would also like to get in that sub 4 hour marathon.  I do not think I am going to try for NYC again this year however I do have my sights set on the NJ Marathon in May which will transition me into the 50M training plan.  Also for 2012, I am taking part in a road racing series in NJ held by the NJ-USATF.  I will use these various 5k-1/2 Marathon races to keep myself sharp and competitive.  Also, it will provide some nice competition with my wife who is also competing in the series.

Goals:
2012
Complete my first ultra
Sub 4 Hour Marathon
Run this summer w/o a shirt on

2013
Run a sub 20 minute 5K
Complete Keys 100M
